I have taken to sewing like it is the only thing that’s going to keep me from drowning in this sea of mess.
Last week we finally took a decision to not move houses. Sounds like an easy and a good decision right? Except that it means that out current house needs a bit of upgrading. All minor things- like just getting the entire house painted and the woodwork polished. The good part is that we are not paying for this, but as almost anyone knows about house painting in India, this does not mean that one don’t need to constantly run behind the painters and the polishers and in our case also the carpenter. Ah. Such is life for the moment.
N is of course super excited as we are living out of one room in the house. Trust a child to look at things positively.
But of course, I am also dealing with all this with my secret meditation technique: sewing.
I have decided to making small, a teeny bit challenging but not too difficult things. So here I present my first top. It’s this pattern from my favourite Oliver+S, in size 5T. I thought it would be a bit too large on the chest, given the slimness of this child but surprisingly it isn’t. This is only the second thing I have made for her in the 5T size and I still can’t get over the largeness of the pattern pieces, and that she is not actually floating in them.
But. You do see the obvious mistake don’t you? Yes! The flowers are the other way round. And yes, I do have a problem with unidirectional prints. The flowers are literally heading in all possible directions.
I almost gave up when I realised this early on in the sewing, but somehow now with it done I don’t mind it so much. She certainly doesn’t.The raglan sleeves (they are called that, right?) are perfect, and I enjoyed learning the little technique which I believe is called casing and which allowed a part of the neckline to have elastic in it. Really had it not been for the flowers all over the place it would have been such a perfect top.
Then, again, let me not fret over such small things. It’ll carry us through the last month of summer, and possibly with some long sleeve shirts underneath through cooler days on October and November. All in all, it’ll do I say.
More soon. Hope everyone is enjoying the cooler weather. We certainly are restricted as we are to the living room and the balcony!
