For a while now, N has been demanding that I make a blue dress for her. “The Blue Dress” infact as she calls it, like I am supposed to telepathically in some way read her mind. I wish I could, but lacking in that department I have asked her to draw for me, and she has produced just about every other dress design but that. Still it is this thing, prefect in her mind, and just outside my imaginative reach.
To start talking about other colours, and possibly other dresses I came up with the pattern I wanted to make, and let her choose the fabric, with the hope that it met this “idea” of the dream dress. So, I am sure with abated breath you are wondering, as I did, whether this would make the cut. Here is what our conversation went like:
Me: So do you like it?
N: Umm…it’s ok. Ya, I like it. Do you like it?
Me: But you like the fabric right? You chose it.
So much for that.
On my part I can say that having made the same pattern before, it went pretty fast. I made it in size 4T with the bottom part extended by 1.5″ and the length feels perfect. It is quite slim fitting, and already slightly snug around the hips although I notice that the photos don’t show that.
I need to say one thing about the fabric though. Nothing to do with the colour or pattern which I love, (unlike my fickle child here), but I am increasingly getting a bit frustrated with quilting cottons. I have a few of those in my cupboard from my New York days, but I am coming around to agreeing with what I am reading off many blogs. That they are no quite meant for dress making. Perhaps when N was smaller it didn’t matter as much, but now it does. Especially in case of tops and dresses. Any thoughts?
Oh well. And does that mean I should start on a quilt?
