Usually I don’t make any serious modifications in the patterns that I make. But when you are on version 3 of the same pattern, with version 2 made just the week before, it’s time to do a bit of experimenting.
So. I tried to make a kurta out of the Jump Rope dress pattern from Oliver+S, that I love so, and which I just made a few weeks ago.
I had been toying with the idea for a some time now, as N has been demanding that I make her either a salwar kurta or a sari(!!). She loves her frocks and pants but also more traditional Indian wear, and so it was time to make a kurta.
Keeping the basic A line structure of the dress, I made basically three changes:
First, I gave it side slits, to give it a kurta feel.
Second, I changed the dress collar to a stand collar more common in kurtas and good for this weather to keep her neck warm. For this I cut the collar which comes with the pattern and then from then on copied the shape of collar of an old blouse that she has.
And third, while this has nothing to do with a kurta, I added these sleeve button and sleeve-pull ons. Or whatever you call them. I have recently seen them on lot of kurtas (and other blouses, shirts) and they kind of look nice I think. 🙂
The red rose fabric comes from a dress of mine. It’s by Olympus I think and I bought it at Purl Soho ages ago. I just checked and they no longer seem to carry it. All I remember is that it was ridiculously expensive and well worth the price. The cotton has the most lovely drape and is soft like butter. Truth be told, I probably wouldn’t have cut it to make anything for N with this had it been entirely new, but it was already cut and made into a ill fitting dress for myself which never got worn. So I can call it “repurposed” and feel good about it. 🙂 The pink is locally brought.
All in all, I am happy with the results. Only thing is that as a kurta, I think it could do with a looser fit. But it was fun to make and modify.
Next step: salwar! I am looking forward to figuring that out from one of her existing ones.
That’s it from me for today. We leave for our vacation tomorrow, and while I usually don’t post
much at all when I am travelling I have a little surprise for you. So come back for a visit around January 1 and you might find something here!
Happy holidays my dear friends.
